Baldur’s Gate 3 Ending Has 17,000 Variations

The upcoming RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 seemingly has more possible ending variations than anyone might have guessed. According to Fextralife, there are around 17,000 variations of the game’s ending.

Fextralife said they spoke with writer Chrystal Ding, who supplied the 17,000 number. The director of publishing at developer Larian Studios seemingly confirmed the figure, saying in a tweet, “Oh no they found the 17,000 number.”

This doesn’t mean there are 17,000 “main” endings, but rather 17,000 variations of the ending, with the differences being subtle or minor. In terms of the number of endings for the game’s “main” story, Larian apparently was not able to confirm a number.

According to Larian, it will take between 75 and 100 hours to finish the main campaign in Baldur’s Gate 3. For those who want to “do everything,” they should expect to play for around 200 hours, Larian said.

Before this, Larian alluded to Baldur’s Gate 3 being an absolutely massive game. In a recent blog post, the studio said the title has more “cinematic dialogue” than “three times all three Lord of the Rings novels combined.” The game’s 174 hours of cinematics is more than twice the length of every season of Game of Thrones combined.

“All that content serves to give you a tremendous amount of choice and consequence, ensuring everyone’s adventure will be unique,” Larian said.

Baldur’s Gate 3 releases on August 3 for PC, and part of the reason the date was brought forward from August 31 was to avoid a clash with Starfield. The PS5 edition of Baldur’s Gate 3, meanwhile, is set for release on September 6, the day Starfield releases. There is no PS5 edition of Starfield, however. An Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 could still happen, but not until Larian is satisfied with how the game performs across both Xbox Series X and S.
