The State of the Race

“The White Lotus” moving from the Limited Series categories it swept last year to the more competitive Drama categories and still maintaining its dominance in a supporting actress category is very notable. While Jennifer Coolidge was and is as sure a thing as one could be to now win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and Aubrey Plaza and Meghann Fahy seemed too good for voters to ignore, Italian stars Sabrina Impacciatore and Simona Tabasco seemed like longshots for an Emmy nomination.

While vote-splitting is usually a major concern when more than one cast member makes it into an awards category, Coolidge still managed to win last year, and has only become more popular, winning the Screen Actors Guild Award for Female Actor in a Drama Series this year over fellow Emmy winners Zendaya (“Euphoria”) and Julia Garner (“Ozark”).

Also nominated for that SAG Award was “The Crown” star Elizabeth Debicki, so she already has one loss against Coolidge, but the Netflix series’ Emmy history also dictates that its female stars only win for their second season playing their historic roles, so the Australian actress is more likely to win an Emmy next year for her turn as Princess Diana in her final days.

If there is one non-HBO star with any chance of winning this category, it would be “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn, a favorite of fans and critics alike. Similar to “Succession” star J. Smith-Cameron, this is the AMC actress’ last chance to win for playing Kim Wexler, as the “Breaking Bad” spin-off came to an end last year. Given how the show has dozens of nominations and no wins, it seems unlikely that Seehorn will secure a victory, but stranger things have happened at the Emmys.

Power Rankings:

  1. Jennifer Coolidge, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
  2. Rhea Seehorn, “Better Call Saul” (AMC)
  3. Aubrey Plaza, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
  4. Meghann Fahy, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
  5. Elizabeth Debicki, “The Crown” (Netflix)
  6. J. Smith-Cameron, “Succession” (HBO)
  7. Sabrina Impacciatore, “The White Lotus” (HBO)
  8. Simona Tabasco, “The White Lotus” (HBO)

Will Win: Jennifer Coolidge, “The White Lotus”
Could Win: Rhea Seehorn, “Better Call Saul”
Should Win: Meghann Fahy, “The White Lotus”

Last Year’s Winner: Julia Garner, “Ozark”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: With Garner out of the running, having tied the record for most consecutive wins in this category last year, the streak to look at is if Netflix could win Supporting Actress in a Drama a fifth year in a row.
Notable Ineligible Series: Patricia Arquette, “Severance” (Season 2 was not eligible); Sydney Sweeney, “Euphoria” (Season 3 was not eligible); Sadie Sink, “Stranger Things” (Season 5 was not eligible); Fiona Shaw, “Killing Eve” (ended); Julia Garner, “Ozark” (ended)
