The State of the Race

It has been fascinating to see how the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series Emmy category has evolved in such a short time. Just 10 years ago it was necessary for the category to be combined with the one honoring TV movies. This season there were almost as many series being submitted into the category as weeks in a year.

Going into nominations voting, it seemed inevitable that Ryan Murphy’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” would make the cut based on it being one of the biggest hits Netflix has ever had. Based on the winter awards season though, it also seemed like Dennis Lehane’s “Black Bird” would be a shoo-in, but that did not come to pass. Despite limited series about killers making the most noise this TV season, Emmy voters only made room for one in the end, and ironically it’s the one that has the least broad appeal on paper.

Despite it proving to be so popular, “Dahmer” faced a myriad of controversies, so it being Netflix’s only shot at winning the category would make for an uphill battle. But “Beef” was the streaming service’s ace in the hole. Both shows got a whopping 13 nominations, more than any of their fellow nominees, putting them neck and neck with each other in this particular race.

Though it was not a situation where both nominees were from the same network, it brings to mind the recent Emmy race between “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Mare of Easttown” in 2021. While the former won the big award, the latter won most of the limited series acting categories. Considering how the TV Academy voted in that race, and how Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts have already won enough awards this year to be perceived as a lock in their categories, one can infer its members will choose to honor “Beef” here, while coincidentally another Evan Peters series gets highest honors for its acting.

Power Rankings:

  1. “Beef” (Netflix)
  2. “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (Netflix)
  3. “Daisy Jones and the Six” (Prime Video)
  4. “Fleishman Is in Trouble” (FX)
  5. “Obi-Wan Kenobi” (Disney+)

Will Win: “Beef”
Could Win: “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”
Should Win: “Fleishman Is in Trouble”
