PHOTOFAIRS New York takes place alongside The Armory Show at the Javits Center from September 8 to 10, with a VIP Preview on September 7.
The fair offers visitors the opportunity to explore an array of highly-curated displays — from surveys considering the craft and materiality of photography to its intersections with emerging technologies. With one-third of booths showcasing solo presentations, special projects, large-scale installations, publishing projects, and an annual acquisition prize for exhibiting artists, PHOTOFAIRS New York hopes to add a distinct dimension to the global art fair landscape.
With the aim of providing a centralized point for discussions focused on the vast wealth of photography and new technologies, artists included in the fair’s inaugural line-up exhibit photographs, video, soundscape, and sculpture as well as artworks investigating AI, augmented reality, painting, collage, and fiber techniques. Works by up-and-coming image-makers will be platformed alongside in-depth presentations of renowned photographers exploring a range of themes — such as indigenization, ancestral memory, the mythology of self, and the environment.
Complementing the fair are special projects from programming partners Fotografiska, For Freedoms, Jamaica Art Society, Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York, Gagosian Quarterly, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock. A number of talks will be taking place at the Program Lounge and in specific booths.
We are so excited to bring together such a variety of organizations and artists, offering an expansive and forward-thinking view of photography and image-making. Our exhibitors and partners are truly invested in the new platform that PHOTOFAIRS New York provides for their programs and their artists, and we are looking forward to our first of many annual convenings.
