Recollection’, ‘Rising Lords’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 19th, 2024. It ended up being a busier Friday than I expected, and we have several new releases to look at as a result. Another Code: Recollection is leading the pack, but we also have interesting titles like Rising Lords and The Cub to check out. After those summaries, we do our usual closer with the newest sales and expiring discounts of the day. Let’s crack our knuckles and get to work! You don’t have to crack your knuckles if you don’t want to, though. It makes you look cooler if you do, but there are many ways to look cool. Onward!

New Releases

Another Code: Recollection ($59.99)

I don’t think anyone had a high-effort Switch remake of a pair of Cing adventure games on their Bingo cards, but you never quite know what Nintendo will do. Announced late last year, Another Code: Recollection remakes the Nintendo DS and Wii games in fine fashion. Development was handled by Arc System Works, where some of Cing’s employees landed after the developer closed shop. So, you know, in good hands and all that. I’ll have a full review of this one soon, but so far I will say that anyone who enjoyed the original games is likely going to be very pleased with this.

VALIS: The Fantasm Soldier Collection III ($54.99)

Not much milk left in this cow at this point. Okay, let’s see what we have here. As you’ll recall, the first collection had the first three games in the series in their best-loved versions. The second collection brought in the fourth and final (we don’t talk about X) game and padded it out with some other versions of Valis I-III. This one? It’s all padding, in my opinion. You get the PC-88 and Famicom versions of the first Valis, the MSX2 version of Valis II, the Genesis version of Valis III, and the Super NES Super Valis IV. Five games, all of which probably should have been included in the previous collections. That’s how it goes with these Telenet reissues, though. Fans will buy it anyway.

Rising Lords ($19.99)

This is a turn-based strategy game that takes cues from medieval art and board games to create a relatively unique experience. It’s inspired by a wide array of games, but the one that perhaps shines through the most is Lords of the Realm 2. It does a pretty good job of things, offering up some enjoyable management mechanics alongside the challenging combat encounters. Expand your realm, but be careful you don’t bite off more than you can chew. Death comes swift and brutally in this era, after all. We did an interview with the developers last month that you might want to read, and I should be doing a review of this one when I can fit it in.

The Cub ($14.99)

Wow, the description for this one just straight up name-drops a whole bunch of games and movies. I didn’t know that was allowed. It seems like it’s aiming at following in the footsteps of the Genesis Aladdin, Jungle Book, and other such Virgin Games platformers. You’re doing parkour in a post-apocalyptic world, and it certainly has a striking look to it. Reviews so far are not so encouraging with regards to its gameplay, but I haven’t had a chance to lay my own hands on it yet so I can neither back up nor deny said impressions.

Witch Rise ($4.99)

This affordable first-person shooter sees you playing as a girl who has been transformed into a piglet. It was the work of a witch, and you need to collect four staves from four different biomes to gain the power to defeat her and change yourself back. Not the most prestigious of meals in this genre, but if you’ve got a fiver and enjoy the colorful look of it, you could do a lot worse.

Pixel Game Maker Series LUNLUN SUPERHEROBABYS DX ($4.99)

That title sure is something. This is a beginner-friendly platformer about some babies that I presume are superheroes. Lunlun is on the run after being eaten by a giant boss poo. Yes. You have a hammer you can use to take care of smaller poos in your way. There are three different modes, a lot of different babies, and plenty of poo. It’s a poo platformer. Poo. Pooooooooooooooo.

Connected Hearts: Full Moon Curse Collector’s Edition ($14.99)

Find all those hidden objects, everyone. Some kind of business about werewolves in this one, and we all know the best way to defeat them is not with silver but by checking off a list of items and doing the odd minigame. Not my cup of tea, but if it is yours then don’t let my grumping snark stop you.

Sushi Shot ($3.80)

This is more or less Suika Game but with sushi. It does have a multiplayer mode for up to four players locally, so that’s something. SAT-BOX isn’t usually this shameless, so I’ll give them a pass for this one. Keep it up and you’ll end up in the bins!

Noobs Want to Live ($9.99)

Oh hey, another half-baked Vampire Survivors-inspired game that costs more than Vampire Survivors. I’m already at the point with these where I really need to see something interesting to care, and nothing about this game is doing that for me.

The Bin Bunch

Death Motel ($2.49)

MeowMatch ($4.99)

Mystery Box: Evolution ($9.99)

Beach Boys 2: Zodiac Date ($11.99)

Goo Fighter ($4.99)

Beauties Unveiled ($19.99)

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

A bunch of nifty games on sale today. A rather healthy list, I’d say. If you like 3D platformers, don’t miss New Super Lucky’s Tale for its lowest price yet. Chants of Sennaar is also offering a great discount right now. The weekend outbox houses a few interesting titles, but nothing that I want to call out specifically. Check both lists as always.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We’ll be back next week with more reviews, new games, sales, and news. Today’s hospital visit had largely acceptable results. Not getting better, but also not getting worse. That’s the kind of bargain I have come to accept these days. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
