Three bodies means one serial killer…or a decades-spanning sci-fi mystery.
Netflix series “3 Body Problem” is created by “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, plus “True Blood” executive producer Alexander Woo. Based on the novel “The Three-Body Problem” and trilogy series “Remembrance of Earth’s Past,” the mystery series connects 1960s China to a present day case.
The trailer debuted at CES in Las Vegas. The official synopsis reads: “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.”
The eight-episode show will be set in China, Oxford, the United Nations in New York, and the Panama Canal.
The cast includes Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong, and Jonathan Pryce.
Rian Johnson executive produces the series, along with Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue for production company T-Street. Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner executive produce for Plan B Entertainment, with Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke executive producing for Primitive Streak.
Showrunners Benioff, Weiss, and Woo are co-creators, executive producers, and writers of the series. “Game of Thrones” producer Bernadette Caulfield also executive produces. Derek Tsang and Andrew Stanton will direct and co-executive produce, with Jeremy Podeswa and Minkie Spiro also directing.
“What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen,” co-creator Woo told Netflix’s Tudum. “What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species.”
Lin Qi, the late former Chairman of Yoozoo Group, and Zhao Jilong, CEO of the rights-holder of The Three-Body Universe are executive producers, along with Xiaosong Gao and Lauren Ma.
The series will be accompanied by an official “3 Body Problem” podcast hosted by entertainment superfan Jason Concepcion and scientist, educator, and television presenter Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock.
