Kristen Wiig Is a Grifter in Apple TV+ Series – IndieWire

Kristen Wiig is returning to TV with Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale.”

The “SNL” alum leads the dramedy centered around 1969 Palm Beach high society. Wiig transforms into Maxine Simmons, a woman determined to assimilate into the wealthy class.

Per the official series description, “‘Palm Royale’ asks the same question that still baffles us today: ‘How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?’”

Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy, and Kaia Gerber guest star, with Bruce Dern and Carol Burnett making “extra special guest” appearances.

The full synopsis reads: “Palm Royale” is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, “Palm Royale” asks the same question that still baffles us today: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?” Set during the powder keg year of 1969, “Palm Royale” is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance to truly belong.

“Palm Royale” is inspired by Juliet McDaniel’s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” The series is written, executive produced, and showrun by Abe Sylvia for Aunt Sylvia’s Moving Picture Company. In addition to Sylvia, Tate Taylor, Claire Scanlon, and Stephanie Laing direct episodes.

Oscar winner Dern executive produces the series through Jaywalker Pictures along with lead star Wiig, Jayme Lemons, Katie O’Connell Marsh, Tate Taylor, and John Norris for Wyolah Films, Sharr White, and Sheri Holman and Boat Rocker.

While Wiig’s Apple TV+ debut comes on the heels of her “Bridesmaids” co-star and “SNL” cohort Maya Rudolph’s “Loot” at the streamer, “Palm Royale” is Dern’s first partnership with the platform. Dern recently told Entertainment Weekly that she is determined to have “Big Little Lies” return for Season 3. Dern won an Emmy for her turn as lawyer Renate on the HBO series, which co-starred Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz.

“Palm Royale” premieres its first three episodes March 20 on Apple TV+, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through May 8. Check out the trailer below.
