Bette Midler is revealing the secret behind her long-lasting marriage
The actress recently sat down with ET’s Rachel Smith to discuss her upcoming comedy, The Fabulous Four, and the conversation took a delightful turn when Midler shared the unconventional secret to her 40-year marriage: separate bedrooms.
In The Fabulous Four, Midler dons a wedding dress for the first time in nearly four decades, a moment that had Midler discussing her own wedding memories. Midler recalled her hasty nuptials, admitting she didn’t love her wedding dress and chose “the first thing on the rack” after knowing her husband Martin von Haselberg for just six weeks.
As she approaches her 40th wedding anniversary, Midler reflected on the key to her long-lasting marriage. “Separate bedrooms,” she said with a smile. “My husband snores.”
Midler admits that the couple has slept in separate bedrooms from the start of their relationship but “it’s been a fabulous ride.”
Midler also discussed the joy of working with her daughter, Sophie, in the film, and the vibrant female energy brought by co-stars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Meghan Mullally, and Susan Sarandon.
Midler’s character in the film is a widow entering a new relationship and marriage, a storyline that brings plenty of laughs and physical comedy—a hallmark of Midler’s illustrious career.
Midler recently joked on Twitter about joining The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which even caught the attention of Andy Cohen. While Midler doesn’t see herself fitting into the show’s demographic, she enjoyed the fun it sparked online.
“That was a lot of fun, that was a lot of fun. I even heard from Andy Cohen, which was hilarious,” Midler said.
When asked if she’d join the show, Midler admits, “I don’t know, I’m really not sure, I’m not exactly, I don’t think I’m really the demographic but I think that, I think I might be a little too serious for these gals but you know, but they’re a lot of fun.”
Beyond her career, Midler’s reflections on family were heartfelt. She spoke fondly of her daughter, Sophie, calling her “the love of my life” and sharing the journey of Sophie’s decision to pursue acting, despite Midler’s initial reservations.
The Fabulous Four hits theaters July 26.
