Speaking to Vanity Fair, Hugh explained that he was not involved in the 2016 movie Bridget Jones’s Baby because his character “just didn’t belong.”
When he got contacted about Mad About the Boy, he said that he “loved the script.”
“It made me cry, and I wanted to help with this one,” he explained. “But really there’s no part for Daniel Cleaver in it at all. They wanted him in it, and in the end, they’d done something I wasn’t crazy about.”
What changed? Hugh worked on some scenes that would bring his character into the fold, and the filmmakers enjoyed them and decided to keep them in.
“It’s absolutely the best [Bridget Jones book], and I think the movie is very funny and very, very moving,” he gushed about the new movie, which is due in 2025. “I’m not in a lot, I did a week’s work, that’s it … But when you see the film, you’ll be very moved.”
One star from the franchise is seemingly not returning for the new movie.
