Samuel L. Jackson addressed his work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The 75-year-old actor has been playing Nick Fury in the MCU since Iron Man in 2008. He’s gone on to appear in a dozen other projects in the franchise, including blockbuster movies and Disney+ series.

During a recent interview, he looked back on early conversations to join the popular superhero universe. He expressed initial hesitance over the length of his contract, adding that he was surprised by how quickly things progressed.

He also shared one thing that he has not yet gotten to do in the franchise that he really wanted to do.

“I knew I had a nine-picture deal when Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] said that. He was like, ‘We wanna offer you a nine-picture deal.’ I was like, ‘How long I gotta stay alive to make nine movies?’ Not the quickest process in the world, and people don’t do it,” he recalled during a feature for GQ. “I didn’t know they were gonna make nine movies in like two and a half years.”

He continued, laughingly saying, “It just kind of crazy. It’s like, ‘Oh, s-it, I’m using up my contracts.’”

Samuel added that it “worked out.”

One thing that he has not yet gotten to do in the franchise is visit Wakanda. After the release of Black Panther, he said that he, Don Cheadle and Anthony Mackie all wanted to visit the iconic world.

“They made it,” he said, referencing Avengers: Infinity Wars. “They got to go fight. I still didn’t get there.”

Samuel also expressed surprise that he was not included in a key fight scene that took place during Captain America: Civil War.
