Variety reports that Joker 2 will be available to rent at home beginning on October 29 in hopes that Warner Bros. will be able to recoup some money from its investment into the film.

The report states that the movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the movie and about $100 million on marketing and distribution. When factoring in the cut that movie theaters take, the film would need to gross $450 million at the box office to break even, though Warner Bros. sources claim the break-even number is $375 million.

Variety reports that Joker 2 is “poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical run.”

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded by saying, “Any estimates suggested by anonymous ‘insiders’ or ‘rival executives’ are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact. The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.”

The director of the movie has confirmed the meaning behind the film’s twist ending.
