“It didn’t follow the traditional pattern,” Anna said about the relationship, via Us Weekly. “I was finding it really difficult to identify it and name it as abusive.”
Anna added that she noticed an “overnight switch” in her partner’s behavior. At first, she blamed herself.
In fact, she said that they attended couples therapy, and their therapist also “bought his stuff” at first. Their therapist later “apologized” for misreading the relationship.
“It was very, very difficult to actually go, ‘No, this, I think this is, I think this is him. I think, I think this is his stuff,’” she recalled. “I turned my life completely upside down trying to fix whatever was wrong with me.”
She continued, noting that sometimes she still struggled with discussing the relationship and blaming herself after staying in it for seven years.
“I think he genuinely believed that I was like, torturing him,” she said, noting that he was “convinced” that he was the victim.
