Lee Jung-jae vs. Front Man

The Emmy-winning “Squid Game” is commencing its life or death competition once again.

The second season of the hit Netflix show has unveiled its teaser at Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s biggest Comic Con. Lee Jung-jae returns as Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, for Season 2.

The official synopsis reads: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the states and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won. With a hardened demeanor and the scars of past games, Gi-hun is on a desperate mission to expose the deadly truth of the competition. Yet, his warnings go unheeded, and tensions rise as fellow players question his intentions. Lee Byung-hun is also back as the mysterious Front Man, whose true motivations remain cloaked in secrecy, while Wi Ha-jun’s Hwang Jun-ho returns, driving the narrative forward as the relentless detective on a mission of his own.”

Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, “Squid Game” premiered in 2021 and became Netflix’s most popular title ever. Hwang was developing “Squid Game” for 12 years prior to the show dominating the Global Top 10 for nine consecutive weeks — a first for any non-English series. The series went on to also make Emmy history with first-ever wins for a non-English language series, including Best Actor for Lee.

Netflix debuted reality series “Squid Game: The Challenge” and touring activation “Squid Game: The Experience,” plus VR game “Squid Game: Virtuals” and multiplayer video game “Squid Game: Unleashed.”

Hwang writes, directs, and executive produces the series, with Kim Ji-yeon also executive producing. “Squid Game” is a Firstman Studio production.

Netflix announced in July 2024 that “Squid Game” will conclude with its third season. A long-rumored English-language spinoff from David Fincher could also revisit “Squid Game” sooner rather than later. Fincher has partnered with Netflix for a slew of projects since 2013, ranging from series “House of Cards” to “Mindhunter” and “Love, Death, & Robots.” The auteur also directed and produced films “Mank” and “The Killer” for the platform.

“Squid Game” premieres December 26 on Netflix. Check out the teaser below.
