In honor of son Roman’s first birthday, Jana Kramer is reflecting on a scary experience while pregnant.
“The before and after I prayed for,” Kramer, 40, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, November 12, alongside pictures of Roman’s room before and after he was born. “On the eve of Roman’s first birthday I’m feeling all the emotions but mostly just so grateful. Around 8 weeks pregnant I started to heavily bleed. I started to cry as I knew just what was happening as I’ve miscarried multiple times before in my past. I was shocked when we saw a heartbeat later that day.”
She continued, “I was told I had a subchronic [sic] hemorrhage and because the hemorrhage was bigger than the baby at the time, there was a 50/50 chance I would miscarry.”
Kramer gushed that she’s “so thankful” for her husband, Allan Russell, for hearing “the positive side of it” while the One Tree Hill alum admitted “all I heard was I’m going to lose the baby.”

“For the next 8-10 weeks I would see blood and for anyone that has miscarried you know it’s the most uneasy thing to see when you’re pregnant. But the hemorrhage went away and Roman kept growing,” she wrote. “Then there was the fibroid that kept growing that we were told could interrupt the placenta. Everyday I prayed so hard for this sweet baby to just keep on beating.”
Kramer explained that when she wrote prayers and scripture on the foundation of their home, all she was thinking was “just keep on beating baby.” (Per Kramer’s Instagram post, the phrase “Keep beating baby” was written on a beam of the room alongside a heart.)
“I have had multiple miscarriages and it isn’t lost on me I got pregnant the very first month we tried,” she continued. “I hope no matter what age, or how long it’s taking, or if you have had loses, that you never lose hope. I know it’s not easy though and I’m sorry… but I can promise you that God and their heartbeats will always find a way.”

Kramer and Russell, 43, welcomed son Roman in November 2023. “Allan and I are both overjoyed and truly grateful to announce the birth of our son, Roman James Russell. We feel blessed to have been given the chance to create something so special together,” the pair shared in a statement to People at the time. “The name Roman really isn’t inspired by anyone, it’s just a strong name that we both love, but James (his middle name) was both of our Grandpa’s names, so that was a nod to them.”
Alongside Roman, Kramer is also mom to daughter Jolie, 8, and son Jace, 5, whom she shares with ex-husband Mike Caussin. The exes were married from 2015 to 2021.
