Selena Gomez spoke out after actor Eugenio Derbez critiqued her performance in Emilia Perez.
While on the Hablando de Cine podcast, the actor described Selena‘s performance as “indefensible.”
The focus of the critique seemed to be on the actress’ Spanish in the movie. She is not fluent in the language but delivered lines in Spanish.

Eugenio said that he was confused to see Selena‘s performance being celebrated.
“I feel like what happens is they don’t speak Spanish,” he mused, via The Hollywood Reporter. “If you watch a Russian film or a German film that is subtitled in Spanish and you see someone [speaking in the original language], you say, ‘Oh, look. OK. How interesting.’”
A clip of the interview was shared on TikTok, and Selena reacted in the comments section.
“I understand where you are coming from..I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn’t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie,” she wrote.
In a separate comment she defended her fans, writing, “Also do not ever say my fans are the problem standing up, as you say, for me.”
