“Dune: Part Two” (feature effects/foley), “Wicked” (feature music editing), and “Saturday Night” (feature dialogue/ADR) were the big winners at the 72nd annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards, February 23 at The Ebell of Los Angeles.
The feature international award went to “Emilia Pérez,” the feature animation award belonged to “The Wild Robot” (which has been sweeping the guild and honorary awards), and “The Blue Angels” took the feature documentary prize.
For TV, the Motion Picture Sound Editors honored “Shōgun” (long form dialogue/ADR), “Ripley” (long form effects/foley), “The Penguin” (long form music editing), “Earthsounds” (short form sound editing), and “Only Murders in the Building” (short form music editing).
As previously announced, the MPSE honored Kevin Costner (“Horizon”) with the Filmmaker Award and supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath (“Twister”) with the Career Achievement Award.

As we head into the Oscar homestretch, “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked” find themselves in a three-way sound race with “A Complete Unknown,” which took the live action sound mixing award this weekend at the 61st CAS Awards.
The “Dune” team, led by supervising sound editor Richard King (going for a record fifth Oscar), had more battles on Arrakis, as well as the noise of Harkonnen crowds during the infrared gladiator fights on Giedi Prime. Crucially, there were many sand recordings in the field and on the foley stage, the most interesting of which were low-end groans. Plus, the sandworms were much more prominent and required more movement sounds in the “Dune” sequel.
The “Wicked” team, led by supervising sound editors John Marquis and Nancy Nugent, recorded all of the solo musical performances live on-set (allowing dialogue delivery to develop naturally into song). But for the spectacular “Defying Gravity” climax, in which Elphaba flies away on her broomstick, Best Actress nominee Cynthia Erivo sang while flying on wires with silent wind focused on her cape.
“A Complete Unknown’s” sound team, led by supervising sound editor Donald Sylvester, pushed the early ’60s authenticity. The many musical performances (in clubs, at the Newport Folk Festival, and in recording studios) were done primarily live on set at the insistence of Best Actor nominee Timothée Chalamet, who spent five years preparing for the part. The 22-minute Newport segment was shot from beginning to end with 20 mics.
