If you’re curious about the case of Natalia Grace (Barnett) Mans, well, you’ve probably already watched “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace” on Discovery+ or Max. (Don’t bother with “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: The Final Chapter” or any of the “Curious Case of…” spinoffs — they’re poorly made, rushed cash-grabs.) Still, you might want to check out the upcoming Hulu limited series “Good American Family” starring Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid. Or at least watch the trailer below.
Officially, “Good American Family” is “inspired by” (sure) the real-life story of Natalia Grace (Barnett) Mans, a child with dwarfism who was passed around through the foster system and among several different adopted families. Along the way, questions arise about her age and background: Is Natalia Grace an innocent little girl with a rare condition, or is she a threat? (Or is it a little bit of both?)
“Good American Family” is “told from multiple points of view” to “explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma,” per Hulu.
“This compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple (Pompeo and Duplass) who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism (Reid). But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is,” the streamer’s synopsis continues. “As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.”
Boy does it!
Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue and Jenny O’Hara are recurring guest stars on “Good American Family.”
“Good American Family” is created by Katie Robbins, and executive produced by Robbins and Sarah Sutherland, who are co-showrunners. Pompeo executive produces through her production banner Calamity Jane with Laura Holstein. Andrew Stearn, Dan Spilo, Niles Kirchner, and Mike Epps also executive produce. Liz Garbus directed and executive produced the pilot. The limited series is produced by 20th Television.
Watch the trailer below. The first two episodes of “Good American Family” premiere March 19 on Hulu; new episodes will stream weekly.
