Martin Scorsese is in awe of Robert Eggers.
During a recent Q&A with TCM’s Dave Karger (via World of Reel), Scorsese praised Eggers’ auteurism on his recent film “Nosferatu.”
“It’s amazing,” Scorsese said of the film. “Anything this guy does is amazing. That’s one film you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania and it’s really … Man, he’s something.”
While Scorsese isn’t quite known for horror, Eggers has become a modern master of the genre. Eggers, who previously helmed “The Witch,” “The Northman,” and “The Lighthouse,” announced his fifth film “Werwulf” in January 2025.
“Werwulf” will be a werewolf horror movie set in 13th century England, and will see Eggers re-team with Focus Features. Eggers cowrote the script with his “The Northman” scribe Sjón. Like “Nosferatu,” “Werwulf” will be getting a holiday release; the film is set to premiere Christmas Day 2026. “Nosferatu” became Focus Features’ second highest grossing movie stateside aside from “Downton Abbey,” with $90.5M in grosses.
Eggers recently said during a “Nosferatu” Q&A that “Werwulf” will be even more terrifying than his past films.
“It’s the darkest thing I’ve ever written, by far,” he said.
Eggers previously told IndieWire that “The Northman” is the feature that made him feel like he finally could be called a filmmaker.
“It was a beast, a big learning experience, I’ve said this before, after making ‘The Northman,’ I finally felt like I know how to direct a movie, like I’m not trying to convince people that I know how to direct a movie,” he said. “I’m not someone who has a lot of ideas and just hoping that it’s going to work. That gave me the tools to finally feel confident as a director, so it was nice going into ‘Nosferatu’ with that feeling.”
Meanwhile, cinematic icon Scorsese has a slew of projects in the works, most notably the long-awaited “Devil in the White City” adaptation revived at 20th Century. Scorsese in talks to direct with frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio starring. Erik Larson’s book, “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America,” tells the story of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, following ambitious architect Daniel H. Burnham and the murders of serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes that took place during the event.
DiCaprio acquired the rights to the book in 2010 and was developing a film adaptation at Paramount with Scorsese set to direct. The project was later re-announced as a Hulu limited series, with Todd Field instead directing and Keanu Reeves starring. The project, which had both Scorsese and DiCaprio still executive producing, was scrapped in 2023. It has now as of January 2025 been brought to 20th Century.
