Anthony Mackie and Wyatt Russell on MCU Costumes: ‘Like a Penis’

One thing Anthony Mackie and Wyatt Russell won’t miss from the last Phase of the MCU are their costumes from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

Mackie, who will soon debut on film as Captain America with “Captain America: Brave New World,” told IGN that he refused to wear the Captain America look from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” for the feature. Mackie’s Falcon officially took on the mantle of Captain America in the finale of the Disney+ show following the death of Chris Evans’ Cap. Those are some big boots to fill, and perhaps some really comfortable ones?

“I told them that I was never wearing that shit again, dude,” Mackie said of his costume on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” “That was hard. With the heat, the sweat, the fogged-up glasses, it was impossible. It was called a cowl. It was my worst nightmare. You can’t do anything.”

Anyone who has ever played Batman — most recently that’d be Robert Pattinson — knows all about the cowl issue.

Russell, the star of the upcoming “Thunderbolts,” felt pretty similarly about his own uniform from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” He told Empire that in “Thunderbolts,” he at least can “look fucking cool” in character. “And last time [in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’], I’m going to be honest, I don’t think I looked very cool,” Russell said. “[This time] they made my helmet not look like the end of a penis.”

Yeah, that’s not a good look.

“Thunderbolts” brings the MCU “misfits” together, with Russell reprising his role of a deranged pseudo Captain America John Walker alongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The Taskmaster, played by Olga Kurylenko, and Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen, are also in the ensemble.

“Thunderbolts” has been teased since 2021 and was originally slated to release in 2023 when Phase 5 of the MCU was announced at Comic-Con in 2022. It now premieres May 2 in theaters, with “Captain America: Brave New World” (out February 13) preceding it.
