Everyone Wants to Write Roles for Emma Stone

When Jesse Eisenberg won the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay for “A Real Pain,” he devoted part of his acceptance speech to thanking executive producer Emma Stone. He praised Stone — who also served as a producer on Spirit-nominated films “I Saw the TV Glow,” “Problemista,” and “Fantasmas” — for using her A-list status to help bold independent films get made, calling her a “fairy godmother” who continues to help guide her career.

Addressing members of the press in the winners room, Eisenberg was asked about the possibility of writing a role for Stone, who he has known since they co-starred in “Zombieland” in 2009. The hyphenate admitted that he loved the idea, but playfully cast doubt on the notion that Stone would ever be able to fit one of his movies into her busy acting schedule.

“Every single person in the world who opens a Final Draft folder wants to write something for Emma Stone. She’s the greatest in everything ever,” Eisenberg said, noting that while he tends not to write roles with specific actors in mind, the temptation of collaborating with Stone might be great enough to disrupt his process. “At some point I will probably have the presumption to write something for her, and she’ll have to disappoint me by telling me she’s busy.”

Eisenberg was also asked about how David Kaplan, his character in “A Real Pain” would interact with arguably his most famous role, Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Network.” He joked that the billionaire Facebook founder would not be impressed by his autobiographical alter ego’s low net worth, and the conversation would end soon after.

“I think that guy (Zuckerberg) would ask me ‘Why are you so poor?’” he said with a laugh. “I think that’s what he would say to me, my normal character that is based on me.”

In the eyes of many awards watchers, Eisenberg’s Independent Spirit win will solidify his status as the frontrunner to win Best Original Screenplay at next Sunday’s Oscars.
