Daniel Craig Drops Out of ‘Sgt. Rock’ Movie — Report

Another announced Luca Guadagnino film appears to be suffering from behind-the-scenes shakeups. According to multiple reports, Daniel Craig has dropped out of playing the title role in Guadagnino’s DC Comics adaptation “Sgt. Rock,” which was rumored to be one of the Italian auteur’s next projects.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news but did not give a specific reason for Craig’s departure, noting that other actors are being considered for the military comic book adaptation, with Jeremy Allen White listed as a potential contender to replace him. Representatives for Craig and Guadagnino did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s requests for comment.

Sgt. Rock” was announced in November 2024 and was billed as a reunion between Guadagnino and Craig, who worked together on “Queer.” Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote both “Queer” and “Challengers,” was also on board to pen the script.

First introduced in the 1959 DC comic “Our Army at War,” the character of Sgt. Rock anchored his own comic book series from 1977 to 1988. The character was known for being an elite WWII soldier with strength, endurance, and marksmanship abilities that bordered on superhuman.

“Sgt. Rock” would be far from the first high profile Guadagnino project to hit development snags. The auteur has become famous for announcing films that never saw the light of day, from a “Call Me By Your Name” sequel and a narrative adaptation of Bob Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” album to an “American Psycho” remake, rumors of which were quickly tamped down by Bret Easton Ellis.

Guadagnino is currently in post-production on the Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield vehicle “After the Hunt,” and is slated to direct Josh O’Connor and Léa Seydoux in a film adaptation of Pier Vittorio Tondelli’s novel “Separate Rooms.” Craig will next be seen in Rian Johnson’s third “Knives Out” mystery “Wake Up Dead Man,” which is expected to hit Netflix later this year.

“Sgt. Rock” is part of a new slate of DC Studios movies in development under co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The first film in the revamped DC universe will be this summer’s “Superman,” which is written and directed by Gunn.
