Amber Ruffin Mocks Trump’s Anger at Deadnaming Gulf of Mexico

With the Associated Press still banned from the White House for refusing to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” “Late Night” writer Amber Ruffin couldn’t help but scoff at the circumstances of it all on Tuesday night.

Returning from a two-week hiatus, the NBC late night show used their latest “Amber Says What?” segment to catch up on some news they haven’t had time to cover, including Donald Trump’s renaming of the body of water.

“I heard Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico, and I was like, what did he change it to? ‘Gulf of America?’ Boring!” she joked. “Now’s the time to steal the name Zanzibar. It’s the best name on the planet. We should have it.”

“Then I saw he banned the Associated Press from the Oval Office because they kept saying Gulf of Mexico. And I was like, what? Now you care about deadnaming?” Ruffin continued. “Fine. Well, I’m going to start renaming stuff, too.”

When host Seth Meyers chimed in to tell her she couldn’t do that, she quickly cut him off. “Shut up, Amber Jr.,” she yelled.

The AP isn’t the only banned outlet, though. The White House also recently booted a HuffPost reporter from the press pool as well in an effort to handpick not just the outlets, but also the specific journalists allowed in.

“Then I saw that the White House took control of the correspondence pool, and I was like, what? This is bad news for whoever’s going to host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” the Ruffin said. “Then I checked my email, and was like, whaaaaat?”

Indeed, Ruffin herself is set to host this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. She didn’t say anything specific about it, but she did grin mischievously, sink into her shoulders and toss her hands up, hinting at comedy to come.
