Julia Stiles said Harvey Weinstein’s involvement in her 2000s film “Down to You” is the reason she feels the movie was “executed very poorly” and that the producer, and now convicted felon, made her “so slimy.”
While talking with Brett Goldstein Wednesday on his podcast “Films to be Buried With,” she said Weinstein appeared on set during reshoots for the film and things quickly went downhill. Many of Weinstein’s recommendations for how she was supposed to dance with co-star Freddie Prinze Jr. made her feel uncomfortable.
“[Kris Isacsson] was a first-time director and he was a very, very intelligent, capable guy,” she said. “The script was very good, and then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend. And it just became dumb. As far as I remember — I have not seen it in a long time … and they were pouring money at it, in stupid ways.”
Stiles continued, “I love to dance but it was dumb. It was like, let’s get her on a pool table … it was not even imaginative,” she recalled. “I’m told that, because of the success of ‘Save the Last Dance,’ or the success of ’10 Things I Hate About You,’ with me dancing on the pool table, he like needed to have me dancing in the film. And I felt so slimy doing it the whole time … It was annoying because it was like, ‘Well, this is so cheap, and it’s not adding to the story.’”
“Down to You” had the plot of many rom-coms of the 2000s – two successful and attractive people in a big city experience love at first sight but a number hijinx ensue to try to keep them apart. In this movie’s case, one of those roadblocks is a porn star played by Selma Blair who is dead set on sleeping with Prinze Jr.’s character.
“‘Down to You,’ you can rent it and see,” Stiles finished. “Tell me if the dancing-on-the-pool-table scene is still there, because it was stupid and we shouldn’t have shot it.”
