Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones Go West

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, where it was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, Daniel Minahan’s adaptation of Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel “On Swift Horses” will be released in the U.S. on April 25, 2025.

The film is set during the 1950s and stars Will Poulter as a returning Korean War vet, Lee, who decides to make a new life for himself and his wife, Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones), in California. This plan is challenged when Lee’s brother, Julius (Jacob Elordi) — also a vet — decides to join them out west. As Lee and Muriel explore parts of themselves they’d kept hidden, their lives become the kind of gamble both can’t seem to let go of. Watch the new trailer for the film below.

In our review out of TIFF, IndieWire wrote of the film, “‘On Swift Horses’ is a stunning tableau of almost-romances, weaving together ephemeral moments of magic with the pain that inevitably follows when the universe takes them away. One of the best aspects of Daniel Minahan’s film is the fact that it lacks a conventional villain. Everyone — even Lee, whose very existence is the biggest obstacle towards Julius and Muriel living honestly — makes their best effort to be a good person in a world that seems determined to take everyone away from them.”

Speaking to Vanity Fair in fall 2024, Elordi shared how his performance was influenced by Paul Newman, both as a performer and an individual. “I just watched Paul Newman’s movies and tried to build a voice around the way that he spoke, and movement around the way he moved — particularly in ‘Hud,’ because he has a great sensitivity in his steely output there,” Elordi said.

Elordi also spoke of portraying intimate moments with “Babylon” star Diego Calvo, who plays his lover in the film. “He’s a real cool customer,” Elordi said of co-star Calva. “We had a week of intensive [prep] in the motel room, and [director] Dan gave us a lot of freedom to run around and to play and to find that love within those four walls.”

“On Swift Horses” will be making its U.S. debut at SXSW, where it will close the fest on Thursday, March 13. The film was developed by Minahan and producer Peter Spears, as well as Tim Headington through his production company Ley Line Entertainment. Theresa Steele Page and screenwriter Bryce Kass later joined the team as producers.

Financing was handled by Ley Line and First Gen alongside Wavelength, while production was organized by Killer Films. The following listed as executive producers: Alvaro Valente, Christine Vachon and Mason Plotts (Killer Films), Nate Kamiya and David Darby (Ley Line Entertainment), Randal Sandler, Claude Amadeo, and Chris Triana (FirstGen), and Jennifer Westphal and Joe Plummer (Wavelength), as well as Lauren Shelton, Jeffrey Penman, Elordi, Edgar-Jones, Teddy Schwarzman, and John Friedberg.
